Before you meet
Questions to ask before adopting a dog
A photo can make you want to meet a dog. A few specific questions can help you understand the daily care, patience and support they may need from you.

Start with the person who knows the pet
Use the profile’s contact instructions. For a courtesy listing, the shelter or rescue may only publish the post while an owner or foster caregiver handles enquiries. Confirm who can answer your questions and whether the pet is still available.
You don’t need to ask everything at once. Pick the questions that matter most for your household, and describe what you can realistically offer.
Question 1
What has a normal day looked like for this dog?
Ask about walks, toilet breaks, meals, play and rest in their current setting. Compare that routine with a weekday in your home, including the help you would need when your schedule changes.
Question 2
What happens when they’re left alone?
Ask how long they have been alone, where they stayed and what the caregiver actually observed. A dog who has not spent time alone has an unknown history here; that is different from a dog known to settle comfortably.
Question 3
What have you seen around dogs, cats or children?
Describe your household and ask for examples: who was present, where it happened and whether the animals lived together or only met briefly. Ask how a meeting with your household would be arranged.
Question 4
What makes walks or handling difficult?
Ask about reactions to traffic, unfamiliar people, other dogs, grooming and being touched. If there have been bites, guarding or other concerning incidents, ask what happened and what support or management is currently needed.
Question 5
What are their toilet habits and training routines?
Ask what cues and rewards they know, whether they have lived indoors and when accidents have happened. Find out what has helped so you can plan a consistent routine rather than assume a label such as ‘trained’ tells the whole story.
Question 6
What care and costs should I plan for?
Request the available veterinary records, current care instructions and information about any ongoing needs. Ask what the adoption fee includes and what follow-up is still needed. Discuss individual medical questions with a veterinarian.
Question 7
What happens after I apply—and after I bring them home?
Confirm who handles the adoption, how meetings work, what documents you need and whether support is available afterwards. Ask whom to contact if the placement is not working and read the adoption agreement before deciding.
When the answer is “we don’t know”
Missing information is not a positive or negative answer. Ask what has been observed, what is an estimate and what hasn’t been tried. A shelter stay or brief meeting cannot show every part of life at home.
If something is essential for your household, say so. Ask whether there is a sensible way to learn more and what support is available. It is reasonable to take time or decide a different pet’s needs are a better fit.
A first message you can make your own
Use the contact method provided for that pet. MeetYourRescue doesn’t send this message or arrange the adoption.
